Taxpayers for Term Limits - the beginning

According to Sunbiz, Taxpayers for Term Limits was formed in February 2020.  The three Publix shoppers, Delgado, Vandersteel and Farrel, were all listed as the initial directors.  On the same day as incorporation, Taxpayers for Term Limits set up its Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/TaxpayersforTermLimits/.  The stated purpose of the group is "Government of the people, by the people and for the people requires leaders committed to serving the public rather than themselves! Our goal is to mandate that no politician be allowed to serve more than eight years in one office. "

The domain Taxpayersfortermlimits.org first was registered on January 25, 2020.  The website has a letter from Ms. Delgado, the hit piece ad against Jim Kuretski and a hit piece ad on Karen Marcus (who, last time I checked, was not running for any office in an upcoming election).  The group uses the UPS Store address, probably to try to fool people into thinking that they are in Jupiter.  I'm not sure that anyone in this charade is in Jupiter, other than one of the principals of Public Concepts.

The Taxpayers for Term Limits Facebook page is illuminating.  The initial month is spent advocating for term limits, but then the page turns its attention to favorite targets of conservatives.  First up is AOC, who had not been in office for close to eight years in 2020.  Then Nancy Pelosi, who has been in office a very long time, but her district continues to send her to Washington.  Bernie Sanders is the next target of the group's wrath.

This last attack made me curious.  I wondered how many Republican senators have been in office for more than 8 years.  It turns out that this number is 25.  25 Republican senators and not one is mentioned by Taxpayers for Term Limits.  Maybe they should change the name to "Taxpayers for Term Limits of People We Don't Like"? Even Marco Rubio has served for 11 years.  I don't hear any calls for him to be term limited out.

It appears that TFTL also has a math problem.  Is the organization suggesting that Senators run for reelection then resign?  Does TFTL know that Senators are elected for a 6 year term?  What do we do about that?

What do you call someone who was in the State House for 8 years and will be finishing his second 6-year term as a US Senator?  That would be a total of 20 years.  Does that make this person a career politician?  Or simply Republican candidate Marco Rubio?

The over-8 years club also includes such media darlings as Ted Cruz and Rand Paul.  Interesting, isn't it?

The Squad becomes a target as well - "You wouldn't want this Squad roaming the halls of Congress for the next 30 years, would you?! Support term limits to keep professional politicians from ruining the country more than they already have!" - Yet no member of The Squad is close to 8 years as far as I can tell. But Senators Cruz, Paul and Rubio are over their limit. There is no suggestion to remove any Republican politician from office in any materials for TFTL. Only favorite Democrat targets, until Jim Kuretski and, before him, Karen Marcus, are the focus of TFTL.

When Karen Marcus ran for Palm Beach County Commission, TFTL opposed her. This is odd when one considers the group's Republican leanings. Ms. Marcus' opponent in the County Commission race was Maria Marino, a then-councilor on the Palm Beach Gardens City Council. Want to know who else served on the Palm Beach Gardens City Council? Annie Delgado. In addition to her own fundraising, Ms. Marino had the assistance of TFTL.

So it appears that Taxpayers for Term Limits has opposed one candidate in one election (now two when Jupiter is included) while also opposing Democrats that the group doesn't like. It doesn't oppose term limits for Republicans it likes. So, as I suggested above, the group's name really should be "Taxpayers for Term Limits for People We Don't Like."

Next up - Look what TFTL and Annie Delgado do for fun.
