My motivation for this blog

I received a post card, which I have since discarded, that accused Jim Kuretski of being a lifelong politician.  The post card accused Jim of many untrue things, including placing responsibility for tax and budget increases, in an attempt to paint Jim as someone who is uncaring, tax-hungry and wasteful.  In my experience, nothing could be further from the truth.

I remember when Jim first ran for council.  He was a true citizen-candidate.  Jim lived in the neighborhood next to mine, where he still lives today.  Jim was concerned about traffic management, specifically the use of what is now Island Way and the existing road, North Fork Drive.  There was a push to connect North Fork Drive to Island Way where the two roads would connect in Martin County.  This would drive substantially more traffic through The Shores, where Jim lived, and North Fork, where we lived at the time.  Jim was opposed to this plan, as were many of his neighbors.

But, unlike most of his neighbors, Jim did something about it.  He went on the attack.  As I recall, he challenged the assumptions for the road, its engineering and its potential success.  He criticized our County Commissioner, Karen Marcus, for her stance on the road.  Like a dog with a bone, Jim was tenacious.  One could only respect him for pursuing what he believed in.

When Jim ran for council, I didn't give the campaign much hope.  Jim certainly didn't seem like a baby-kissing candidate.  Jim didn't sugarcoat anything.  What you saw in Jim, in person, is what you got.  Jim hasn't changed much, as best as I can tell, in all the years he's been around.

The one thing one can say about Jim since he's been elected to council - He was right.  He predicted that the traffic would get much worse, and it has.  I've always joked that Jim's campaign slogan should always be "I was right"

During all the years of campaigning, I don't recall Jim publicly saying anything negative about another candidate.  I'm sure if he did say something negative, it was true.  In my experience, the truth is the only thing Jim knows.

This is why the post cards from a group called "Taxpayers for Term Limits" is so troubling.  It is filled with lies and mischaracterizations.  It is so not Jupiter and it is so not Jim.  Even if Jim wasn't willing to dig deep and expose the people behind this post card, I am.  So with my trusty mouse and monitor, I started digging.  Read on to see what I found out.
